The best pool pumps compete for performance and energy efficiency. While filtration is important inground pool pumps must keep up with the high demand of circulating chemicals operating power cleaners including sometimes fountains and other water features.

Single speed pool pumps cannot keep up with these high demands and have to operate at full capacity running up electricity bills and performing poorly reducing the motor’s life expectancy.

We have 2 strong recommendations to solve the single speed pool pump problem the Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF and the Hayward TriStar VS (variable speed). Replacing is dependent on pool gallonage, flow rating needed, size of plumbing, filter size and electrical codes.

Both of these pumps can out perform a single speed pool pump, run more efficiently and save money on operation.

Our first pick is the Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF

The Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF is great for pools with attached waterfalls and spas. It is a perfect choice for any pool with a complex system requiring a top of the line pool pump combining variable speed with variable flow. Speed increases as demand warrants like when a spa kicks on, resistance is detected or more filtration is needed slowing down as demand falls off.

The general client for a pool pump of this caliber would be someone who would like the ability to run schedules, needs a quiet pump and would benefit from integration with Pentair automation. Large pools are a perfect fit not to mention you will enjoy the energy savings.

The Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF retails between roughly $1,289 and $1,800 depending on the horsepower and board configuration.

Features of the Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF

The Pentair Intelliflo3 VSF can be programmed to an operating schedule, that can regulate speed to operate filters, heating, spa use, cleaning and more. The variable speed provides savings in energy use by allowing slower speeds for filtering while increasing speeds for power demand.

Our next recommended pump. The Hayward TriStar VS

For pools that don’t need extra flow control the Hayward TriStar VS offers another programmable variable-speed pool pump that combines low speed while filtering and high speed to power water features vacuuming and more. This upgrade pump replaces older single speed pool pumps for standard application on small to medium pools especially those already powered by Hayward pumps.

The Hayward Tristar VS retails between roughly $1,800 to $2600 depending on the horsepower and model.

Features of the Hayward Tristar VS

Digital controls, timers, programmable speed and diagnostics are just some of the features you get with TriStar VS models. The layout of these controls vary by model. An excellent all around variable speed pool pump especially if you are replacing another Hayward pump with compatible plumbing. Always refer to the pump manufacturer for specific models and compatibility.

Factors to consider when choosing a pool pump

Some factors to consider when choosing a pool pump for your inground pool include cost versus savings, your specific pool size in volume and flow demands. Will you be using an automation system or using fixed speed settings?.

The Hayward Tristar VS & Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF can be operated by an app on your phone or controlled on a schedule using a controller.

Larger pools with water features, fountains and attached spas have high demands while smaller standard residential pools may not. It is advisable to contact or reference the manufacturer specs before purchasing your pool pump.

The savings in energy costs using a variable speed pool pump versus a single speed can be significant up to 90% over a year. Your savings may vary and depend on pool size, volume, plumbing size, if you are using automation and the features of your pool.

Could your swimming pool use some TLC? Years of chemical use and swimmer load can take a toll on your pool’s surface. Give your pool a face-lift by painting your pool..

Painting a pool not only extends the life of a pool but it allows for a more enjoyable experience for swimmers. The process is a do-it-yourself project that requires focus and ability to follow directions.

This guide will provide step by step instruction by professional pool service personnel with 25 years experience in pool maintenance. Once completed you will have a durable finish that will last for years and your swimming pool will look beautiful again.

More then just pool paint…

Painting your swimming pool provides more then just a fresh look. Pool paint provides a layer of protection between the aging plaster or concrete and chemicals that can cause damage.

Unbalanced water alone can cause damage and staining. Replastering your pool is too costly. Paint is a very economical choice when it comes to protecting your pool.

With a paint you can easily change the color and freshen up the pool area while increasing the value when selling your home.

Choosing the Right Pool Paint

There are several choices in paint available to do the job. The cost can range from $60 to $300 depending on which one you choose. The most expensive and most durable are 2-part epoxy paints. Epoxy pool and spa paints last up to 10 years and are the recommended coatings by pool professionals worldwide.

One part epoxy pool paint is easier to work with but not as durable as 2 part epoxy.

If your pool has some cracking a rubber based paint is recommended as these paints can expand or contract as needed. Rubber based is also easier to apply then epoxy but have a shorter life of 2-5 years.

Things to consider are your budget , the paint’s lifespan and the type of surface you will be painting. It is best to read the manufacturer’s label to learn how to apply their specific paint. We have outlined general guidelines and steps below.

Drain The Pool

Before you drain the pool call your city offices to determine any restrictions. A sump pump placed in the deep end connected to a waterhose will help drain the pool completely without damaging the pool pump.

Prep And Cleaning

For a successful paint project proper preparation of the surface is vital. All dirt debris, visible algae and oils must be removed for the pool paint to adhere properly. A good scrubbing with a cleaner specifically formulated for swimming pool surfaces and powerwashing should be followed by acid washing using a pool Muriatic Acid solution.

The Muriatc Acid solution consists of 1/3 gallon Miriatc Acid to 2/3 gallon water mixed in a plastic pale. Follow all safety precautions on the label. Wear a chemical respirator , eye protection, gloves, long sleeved shirt and pants. Wash all clothing immediately following acid washing.

The Muriartic acid solution that accumulates at the pool drain must be nutralized with baking soda before being pumped out of the pool.

Crack Repairs

All repairs need to be made with a suitable pool repair kit including any cracks in the pool. Once repairs are completed sanded and smooth let the pool dry completely. This can take several days. When dry check for any moisture in the surface and clean up any loose debris before painting.

The Painting Process

It is best to have all you supplies at the ready. Make sure you are using good quality brushes and rollers. Double check that you have the correct amount of pool paint.

Paint on a day you know for sure it won’t rain. Start painting just under the coping tile working down the wall to the bottom of the pool. Do the same even if spraying the paint on with a compressor sprayer. Overlap your strokes and keep the paint edge wet while applying light coats not heavy. Work your way from the deep end of the pool and out at the steps. Check again to make sure you have good coverage.

Expect to apply a least two coats. Check for uneven, streaked paint poor coverage before applying additional coats. Fix these areas first then apply your final coat of paint.

Following the paint manufactures instructions allow the paint to dry and cure exactly as directed. After curing you may fill the pool with water. Use a clean garden hose.

Do you own an in-ground gunite pool & hot tub? Something hot tub homeowners should know is to maintain a bright white spa you must acid wash the interior regularly.
Even a lightly used gunite plaster spa can get calcium deposit staining from algae suntan lotions makeup and other contaminants. Acid washing restores the natural color and brightness of your in-ground hot tub while extending it’s life.

The Benefits Of Acid Washing Your Hot Tub

Acid washing means using a strong acid solution to clean the surface of your spa. It helps remove tough stains, calcium deposits, and algae that regular cleaning misses. Unlike scrubbing with chemicals or using deep cleaning equipment, acid washing targets built-up grime on the surface. It’s quick but powerful, making your spa look brand new again.

Why Acid Washing Is Essential

Stubborn stains and aggressive chemicals like chlorine can dull your hot tub’s surfaces. Experts say that acid washing when done correctly will improve water quality, prevent costly repairs and extend the life of your in-ground hot tub surface.

When To Acid Wash Your Hot Tub

There are signs to look out for to know when it is time to acid wash your hot tub. Cloudy water that does not clear up after filtering is one sign. If you start to see algae growing and staining of the bottom and walls it is time. Every 1-2 years or more if your hot tub is used frequently you should acid wash your hot tub. If you wait too long the staining can become permanent resulting in costly repairs.

Preparing for Acid Washing Safety First

Hot tubs are acid washed with a 50-50 mixture of water and Muriatic Pool Acid. This mixture is dangerous to breath and can burn the skin so be very careful. You will need to wear heavy waterproof gloves, goggles use a respirator long sleeved shirt and pants while performing this procedure. Read the entire label on the Muriatic Acid bottle before using.
Use a pool test kit to monitor pH levels in the water and baking soda to stop the pH levels in the water from getting too high. Mix acid carefully in a well-ventilated area, following manufacturer instructions.

Step By Step Acid Washing Instructions

Drain the hot tub. Once empty, remove loose debris/dirt from the floor and walls with a scrub brush.

Put on all safety equipment first. Prepare the acid solution in a spray bottle that does not leak add 50% water and 50% Muriatic Acid to the spray bottle and mix.

Working in sections start at the floor of the hot tub then 2 inches up the floor wall. Spray the floor evenly with the solution. You know the acid is working if it bubbles or you see discoloration. Allow to work for 10-15 minutes then rinse with clean water using a water hose until there is no smell of acid. Once rinsed neutralize the standing water with baking soda solution.

Continue working your way up the walls, then the steps and out of the hot tub. At any time you can drain the diluted standing water in the hot tub. Just remember to neutralize the water again several times as the project progresses. If you get any of the acid solution on your skin or clothes remove them right away or wash your skin immediately with fresh water. If you get it in your eyes flush with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Repeating the process may be needed on tough stains.

Inspection and Water Chemistry Adjustment

Inspect the hot tub for any missed spots and treat if needed. Check the hot tub for any cracks and note damage. Once all diluted acid water is drained from the hot tub you can refill it and adjust the chemicals.

When finish triple rinse the spray bottle with water and wash your clothes.

The addition of periodic algaecide and mineral inhibitors work great when encountering heavy deposits or excessive algae in your hot tub. A routine maintenance and water chemistry testing program will help you keep your spa looking and performing it’s best. Draining your spa should be done every 3-6 months during use.
