Exterior cobwebs are not only messy and unsightly they make your home look unkempt and in poor maintenance. Nothing worse then trying to remove cobwebs from you home and keeping them from forming in the first place.

Our cobweb removal guide will help you easily remove cobwebs using trusted methods professional cleaners use every day to keep homes looking pristine.

Safety Precautions you should take

Things to keep in mind when removing cobwebs. You will be working overhead most likely with a pole and using a ladder. Debris and even spiders can fall onto your face.

Wear eye protection and a long sleeved shirt. Look for overhead electrical or phone lines coming into your house and keep the metal pole away from those lines

Tools needed to remove cobwebs

The most important tool will be the brush which does most of the work. It is a synthetic brush that attaches to a pole designed specifically to remove cobwebs with flexible bristles that won’t harm your home’s siding or paint. You can purchase these brushes online or at your local hardware store for about $20.

You will also need a telescoping pole that can be extended to reach 2nd story homes if needed. A 15-20 foot extension should be good. As mentioned for safety from falling debris a pair of safety glasses and gloves will be needed.

Knowing the different types of spider webs is important

To remove spider webs properly you need to know that not all of them are the same. Depending on the type of cobweb left by a spider this will determine the method used to remove it.

The typical round cobweb is soft and thin. This type only requires a duster to remove it while cobwebs that are dense and stronger like those left by  a Black Widow spider require more effort.

The tough ones collect more dirt and are stickier requiring the stiff brush and pole. If needed a quick spray with a water hose will help to remove any left-over residue.

Using the cobweb removal tool

The telescoping pole and cobweb removal brush will make removal a lot easier allowing you to reach high areas under eaves  and in corners. Start at the highest point of your exterior walls. Working down the wall and using the bristles from the brush twist the brush in a circle wrapping the cobweb around the brush. Avoid pressing hard against the wall as this will smear dirt and pieces of cobweb all over the area.

This is the best method for removing the cobwebs from exterior walls.

How to use water effectively

Yes water can be used to remove cobwebs and the mess they make. A water hose can be used to remove cobwebs around your patio, porch and hard to reach areas.

Use the “Jet” selection on your spray nozzle. The force of the water will detach the cobwebs and then clean the area after. Take care around windows and doors to avoid damaging weatherstrpping and caulking. Keep in mind any loose or flaking paint on your siding will be removed along with the cobwebs.

Removing any residue left behind…

Sometimes even high pressure water will not remove residue left behind after removing cobwebs. In this case you can use tape to remove the residue and stubborn cobwebs. Before using tape make sure that the walls and eaves are completely dry to avoid making an even bigger mess.

Wrap duct tape with the sticky side out around the telescopic pole tip. Use the tape to press into the web and residue to remove. When the tape gets full remove the tape and throw away.
